Hey Guys,

there seems to be a problem with your version of Firefox, since it doesn't seem to be possible to apply partial updates. Firefox tells me everytime, that partial updates failed to apply and that it therefore will download the full update package.

This is quite annoying when you're on the Nightly, aurora or beta channel.

Do you confirm this bug?

If so please fix it!

Thanks a lot

Hi gibdemaffen,
yes, I confirm too that partial updates cannot be applied on X-Firefox (or, at least, I've never succeeded...).
Until today I don't considered this as a critical bug (I use only the official releases channel), but, under your point of view, this can be really annoying...
Analyzing the error log, the absence of the \uninstall folder could be one cause of this malfunctioning.
At this moment, I cannot test myself extensively, so can you please do the following test?

1) Edit X-Firefox.ini file and modify the row

DirRemove=$ExeDir$\uninstall

as

;DirRemove=$ExeDir$\uninstall

(i.e. comment out the row, prepending a ";" character)

2) create the folder (X-Firefox folder)\Bin\Firefox\uninstall
3) unzip into (X-Firefox folder)\Bin\Firefox\uninstall the content of the zip file that I attached below
4) wait for next nightly build and see if it is applied correctly

Please tell us it this fixes the bug, so we can correct it in the next X-Firefox release.
Best Regards
ZioZione
P.S. ... and, please, vote for us in the SourceForge contest "Project of the Month"!!!!

Thanks. I'll try that and report as soon as the next partial update flys in...

I tried the above method on some beta versions and it seemed to work (i.e. no errors applying updates).
Can you please attach the error log subsequent to the failed update so we can analyze it? Thank you!

Hi gibdemaffen,
no more need of your log... Just tried today to update X-Firefox and failed...
Analyzing the log, the problem was still about the \uninstall\helper.exe file, whose size was different from what expected.
Is my fault because I posted a file that does not matched to the latest release. But I think that, downloading and installing the latest, complete, upgrade, should fix also that file.
So, my suggestion is leave all the things exactly as they are. The next upgrade should (I hope) work correctly... let me know!
Best Regards

Alrighty - just to make clear I got that right: I just downloaded a fresh copy of X-Firefox_rev4 from WPP. And I downloaded a fresh copy of Nightly 14a1 which was released yesterday and replaced the X-FF files with the Nightly files.

I applied the changes above to the .ini file.

Now I'm waiting for partial updates to come - I'll report what happens.

thanks

yesterday evening I performed other tests and I had other errors... the updater is extremely fussy and nagging about the files it updates... So, there seems to be the need to perform another action (sorry)

Summarizing, I suggest to restart from scratch, performing following steps:
1) download the latest X-Firefox available in our site (as you have already done)
2) unzip it in a folder of your choice (say "C:\X-Firefox")
3) browse to "C:\X-Firefox\Lib\Mozilla\Firefox\setup" and edit (your old friend ) X-Firefox.ini, commenting (i.e. prepend with ";" char) the following rows:

row 54:
;DirRemove=$ExeDir$\uninstall

rows 76-77:
;[WriteToIni=$ExeDir$\application.ini]
;Crash Reporter|Enabled=0

4) Execute X-Firefox.exe (so it installs the latest Firefox release available, today is the 11.0)
5) Close X-Firefox
6) (optional) Edit "C:\X-Firefox\Bin\Firefox\defaults\pref\channel-prefs.js" file, and change the update channel to "nightly".

I know that a lot of people disables the crash reporter (this is the reason we disabled it by default), but this setting prevents the partial updates to work correctly, so is fundamentally a personal choice. The step 6 is, of course, only for whose that want to stay updated with the nightly builds, otherwise can be skipped.

In the next few days check for updates from the Help|About menu item, and let us know if they are (finally) installed correctly.

Best Regards

Hey zio,

I'm sorry, but it still doesn't work.

Downloading partial update

Update fails

.ini Settings

I don't know why - but now also the full update fails

but that could be a Nightly issue and have nothing to do with WPP...

Applying an update (full not partial) on the release channel works though.

To conclude - partial updates still don't work!
