Si tratta di una feature che completa ed esalta tutte le nuove caratteristiche del Menù.

Precisiamo subito che non si tratta di una funzionalità totalmente automatica. Una funzionalità del genere sarebbe stata così complicata da implementare e così soggetta a problemi che abbiamo preferito un approccio molto più fattibile e onesto. Il Menù, all’apertura (o manualmente tramite un comando nel Menù contestuale della finestra di configurazione) verifica gli aggiornamenti dal sito di winPenPack, li confronta con quanto presente localmente e visualizza all’utente l’elenco di tutte le differenze riscontrate (versione, release del launcher, ecc.). Da quel punto in avanti è l’utente che decide, in piena autonomia, le azioni da intraprendere: se e cosa installare, come farlo (scaricando la nuova versione dal sito del programma o, nel caso degli X-Software, dal nostro sito), completare le informazioni su versione e revisione (per i programmi portable che ne fossero ancora sprovvisti), visitare il sito del programma per scoprire cosa è cambiato e se vale la pena di aggiornare, ed eventualmente predisporre un programma per ignorare (volendo) ulteriori aggiornamenti. L’elenco può essere filtrato per visualizzare solo gli aggiornamenti da una certa data in avanti. Il tutto è improntato alla massima flessibilità e semplicità di utilizzo.

Nota bene, è importante tenere ben presenti due cose:
  1. una volta deciso che si vuole aggiornare un determinato X-Software (o portable), questo aggiornamento non avviene automaticamente, ma tale programma va scaricato dal sito ed installato nel Menù con la funzionalità “Installa Software...”;

  2. gli aggiornamenti vengono controllati a partire dal nostro sito (questo esclude, di fatto, tutti i programmi eventualmente installati nel Menù dell'utente ma non presenti nel sito di winPenPack); inoltre potrebbe capitare di avere in locale, o che esistano, versioni più recenti di quanto segnalato dalla finestra di aggiornamento. Questo quasi sempre accade per scelte precise da parte del Team: ad esempio, se un programma, da una certa versione in poi non è più portable, ma si vuole ugualmente dare la possibilità di scaricarne l’ultima versione portable; oppure se la nuova versione è ancora in test di portatilità da parte del Team. Potrebbe però accadere (fortunatamente un evento sempre più raro) che effettivamente non sia stata ancora pubblicata sul nostro sito la nuova versione: in questo caso potete essere voi stessi a segnalarcela, contribuendo a tenere sempre aggiornato il nostro archivio.

Siamo convinti che adesso il Menù di winPenPack abbia raggiunto un buon numero di funzionalità veramente utili e un buon grado di maturità. Affinché possiamo migliorare sempre più la qualità del progetto, serve l’apporto di tutti. Vi invitiamo quindi a scaricare e testare (numerosi) questa nuova versione e a farci conoscere le vostre impressioni.

We want to inform you immediately, this is not yet a fully automated feature. Such operation would be too complicated to implement, and we always shy away from solutions that might generate unnecessary problems. Therefore, we have chosen to go for a much more practical, feedback-based beta. When the menu starts (whether on autorun or when it's launched manually from the command in the contextual menu present in the Configuration Dialog), it automatically checks for updates from the winPenPack site. It compares your personal package with our remote database and shows the user a list of all differences (version,launcher releases, etc...). After this, you can decide independently what actions you wants wPP to implement, such as what to install and how (normal programs will be downloaded directly from their websites, while X-Software programs will be downloaded from our website). You can also complete information about version and revision (this is useful for portable programs that are still lacking), or visit the program website to check out any last changes that may have been made, and decide whether it is worth upgrading. If desired, you can also change the update settings so that a program to be ignored for further updates. The update list can be filtered to display only news since a given date. Everything has been programed for maximum flexibility and ease of use.

It is really important to keep in mind two things:
  1. once you decide to update a given X-Software program (or a portable program), the update won't start automatically; instead, you have to download the program from the referred site and then install it in the wPP menu by means of the "Install Software" feature.

  2. all updates are controlled from our website. This behaviour excludes all programs that are not originally present in the wPP suite and have been manually installed by the user in the menu.
    Please note that the Update List may not reflect the exact latest version available: usually this is due to a specific choice by the wPP Team. Firstly, if the latest version of a program is not portable anymore, we will make sure to give you the possibility of installing the latest portable version. Secondly, if the latest portable version is still under test, it is preferable to wait until the tests on it are complete. Finally, it may also happen that the newest release of said program has not yet been published on our website, (hopefully a rare event). In this case we encourage you to report it, so that we can make sure that our records are always updated.

We believe that this new version of winPenPack boasts a full set of really useful features and a first-rate degree of stability. Of course, to continue improving the quality of the project we need your active aid. We invite you all to download and test this new version and let us know what you think.
