Il software è disponibile per Microsoft Windows, Linux e Mac OS X. Il suo formato nativo è il CSG. BRL-CAD permette di lavorare in 2 e 3 dimensioni e di realizzare rendering fotorealistici. La sua caratteristica principale è quella di poter costruire ed analizzare modelli realistici - comprese le caratteristiche fisiche del materiale - di oggetti complessi usando un set limitato di primitive. Inoltre BRL-CAD è particolarmente veloce durante il raytracing. BRL-CAD è attualmente utilizzato per il supporto balistico e per la analisi elettromagnetiche, nonostante abbia trovato un uso anche in ingegneria e nella grafica. (fonte corsiinrete.it) BRL-CAD è un modellatore solido di tipo Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) cioè basato sull’algebra booleana e sviluppato da più di 20 anni dal U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL). È lo stesso laboratorio che ha sviluppato nel 1947 il famoso ENIAC, primo computer costruito funzionante a valvole. BRL-CAD è stato sviluppato a partire dal 1979 inizialmente per verificare il comportamento strutturale dei carri armati in combattimento ( il primo è stato il carro XM-1). In seguito è stato usato anche in altri settori, non solo militari, come quelli per la modellazione dei solidi e per l’analisi dei materiali applicati. Nel 2001 è stato rilasciato come Open Source Solid Modeling e reso disponibile con licenza GNU GPL nel sito SourceForge.net per i principali sistemi operativi. È dotato di un’interfaccia grafica molto scarna ma fornisce prestazioni elevate di rendering in ray tracing e un ambiente avanzato per l’analisi di modelli complessi, facendo ricorso anche alle numerose librerie sviluppate in diversi anni di applicazione. Nel 2005 al Convegno ACM Siggraph è stato dedicata a BRL-CAD un’intera sessione di lavoro Portable tips how-to: Installare normalmente il programma, alla fine copiare il contenuto della cartella di installazione in una cartella a piacere, alla fine disinstallare il programma. Per avviare il programma. posizionarsi nella cartella /Bin/ e lanciare il file batch "archer.bat", infatti i file batch permettono di impostare tutte le variabili home e path del programma scritto in tcl.
