Hi everybody...new member here....very impressed by what i see! I have been using Iron for about a year, and just saw Marco and Alex posting over there, that's how i found this site. So far i have installed your x-iron portable to my flash drive, but i see i should download the entire winpenpack package, but i can't find one that has iron browser in it.

So far i have opened it and signed in to this site, to test it out and it worked great. I have no experience with any portable apps at all. also, i have a bunch of other files on the flash drive, but it's an 8gb drive, and i have plenty of room left.

Also, i have been complaining much about iron taking away a feature in my version of iron, 7.0.520.1, which you can add the flag (space --enable-cookie-prompt) to the target field, and it will ask you if you want to allow any cookie to be set.

Otherwise you have to allow or block all. You can mess with the cookie icon, but it's nowhere near the same flexibility that the ask me feature has. That keeps me from using the latest build of iron. So, my question is, do i even need to keep fanboys adlocker updated, or do i even need an adblocker with x-iron? Sorry for so many questions but this is all new to me. Thanks for any answers in advance.

Hi Jaz,
nice to meet here too!

X-Iron can be manually integrated in a suite with the "Install Option".
Have a look here:
-Link-

Regarding Your suggestion about the intyegration of "--enable-cookie-prompt" flag. Is it still natively supported by Iron 9.*.* ??
If Yes, You can simply add it in Your X-Iron.ini file:

Editing ini file with a simple text editor You would modify the string
[FileToRun]
PathToExe=$Bin$\$AppName$\$AppName$.exe
Parameters=--user-data-dir="%Profile%" --disk-cache-dir="$Cache$"

in

[FileToRun]
PathToExe=$Bin$\$AppName$\$AppName$.exe
Parameters=--user-data-dir="%Profile%" --disk-cache-dir="$Cache$" --enable-cookie-prompt

ADblock question:
this is my experience. I Installed the Chome Plugin "AdBlock" -Link-
into my X-iron and it works great!

Hope this post can help You!

Anyway don't forget to have a look on our FAQ:
-Link-

these are very useful regarding your current situation...
-Link-
and
-Link-

here You can DL our new launcher in beta testing but really stable!

Hi Marco...thanks for your reply and the links! I'll be sure to check them all out in full. I want to add about why i use iron instead of chrome, though. You (and probably many others here) already know about chromes "privacy concerns", and why Iron is better. It is not connected to a server.

If i attempt to ad most of chromes add-ons or extensions, i get a warning saying chrome (or google) will have access to my info and basically...invade my privacy. So i am very anti google or chrome. That's what i love about iron. and i see you people share the same privacy concerns. At the moment, i have a rather elaborate setup you can see on Irons forum re; fanboys adblock list.

It has nothing at all to do with chrome or google, and no connections are made to their servers. I have a adblock_update.js script on my desktop that i click, and it downloads fanboys updated adblock list right to my iron adblock folder. Very nice. So my goal is to merge my older version of iron, 7.0.520.1, the latest version that the ask me cookie option works with, into your penpack folder, and be able to update my browsers adblock list.

i see this might be a problem because you have modded your work based on the latest release of iron (9), which i refuse to use because iron (and chrome1st) crippled that feature. Chrome hates your right to privacy. And i hate them back for it...lol. I am petitioning iron, (as i have said in above post) to give the option back to us. Today i see they have granted on users request about 12 thumbnails instead of 8, but have ignored my request so far.

I left them a polite response and will not give up until they give us that option back. Thanks again for your help!

Marco, I just went and tried to download your adblocker, and i got this pop-up warning...

install adblock?

This extension can access:
Your data on all websites
Your browsing history
-------------
I typed this word for word. See why i hate chrome? Iron doesn't track me. This extension is connected to a server and auto updates. Just about all chromes extensions do this, because they are connected to their servers and they auto-update.

That's what i like about using fanboys adblock list and the way i have it set up so i can manually update it w/o getting any warning pop-ups that I'm being tracked. I don't even use google..they do the same thing. I use an alternative called scroogle...http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm. (the link thing doesn't work for some reason.)

My next question would be, can i use this version of iron (they have a portable version of build 7.0.520.1, with the ask me cookie option.

Hi jaz,
ok now your posituion about google/chrome is more clear!
I'm not so adverse like you on google policy. Me too use Iron because of different approach with privacy policy of web surfers.
But, IMHO, some add-ons (i.e. Ad-Block) can be used also if during installation they have a warning.
In fact I use AD-block since long time and it never has been update automatically.
Maybe would be good to ask Iron team if their modifications on source code of chromium is also getting better behaviour about installed add-ons.

I also used fanboy list in the past, but I was too lazy to write a script for an automatic update of his list. So I started to use Ad-block.

Our launcher now is a little bit different compared on old used for build 7.0.520.1, but maybe our "boss" Danix has a copy archived somewhere on our server.
So I'll ask him if it is possible to "resume" that version for You.
Stay tunded...

---EDIT---

I found by myself the old copy of X-Iron!
here You can DL it from my dropbox link...

It is possible to download the .ini file rev_6 from here. It must be renamed to X-Iron.ini and can be used with the 7.0.520.1 Iron version (to copy in \Bin\Iron directory instead of new version) associated with the new X-Iron.exe.

Very awesome! Thank you sooo much for posting Iron version 7.0.520.1 that has the "ask me cookie option". It is the latest version of Iron it works with and is what i am using now. And yes...lol. I am pretty anal about my privacy...lol. you speak of an auto updater you can use manually.

Over at Iron forum, A user has posted adblock_update.js code. It is actually for Opera, but fanboy and another forum member have integrated it so it works with iron version.

Here is the code.
----------------------------

http = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")
fso = new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

http.open("GET", website="https://fanboy-adblock-list.googlecode.com/hg/opera/urlfilter.ini", false)
http.setRequestHeader("Accept","text/html")
http.send()
f=fso.CreateTextFile(file="C:/Program Files (x86)/SRWare Iron/adblock.ini", true)
f.Write(http.responseText.replace(/\*/g,"").replace(/#/g,"# "))

http.open("GET", website="https://fanboy-adblock-list.googlecode.com/hg/opera/urlfilter-stats.ini", false)
http.setRequestHeader("Accept","text/html")
http.send()
f.Write(http.responseText.replace(/\*/g,"").replace(/#/g,"# "))

http.open("GET", website="https://fanboy-adblock-list.googlecode.com/hg/opera/urlfilter-rus.ini", false)
http.setRequestHeader("Accept","text/html")
http.send()
f.Write(http.responseText.replace(/\*/g,"").replace(/#/g,"# "))

f.Close()

--------------------------------
Just copy and paste it in notepad, (w/o the dotted lines) save as adblock_update.js to your desktop, and just click on it. It connects directly to fanboys list, downloads and installs the updated list, then disconnects. I love it. And it has nothing at all to do with googles snoopy servers...lol.

Oh wait, i just thought of something, it might not work because the target is different than what your probably is. Anyway, i left it so if someone knows how to manipulate the code to work with your x-iron winpenpack directory, you can use it. As a matter of fact every link here is for windows 7, 64 bit, and it's for my .exe version i have in C:\program files(86)\SRWare Iron.

Alternately, you can put a link directly to the iron list in your toolbar, adblock.ini. Click on it, and ONLY the new list opens up, and you can copy and paste that into notepad, save as adblock.ini, close the browser, go to iron directory, (wherever that is on your setup, and replace the adblock.ini with the new one by dragging and dropping from desktop to iron adblock.ini file. no connection to any server is made, only for you to copy and paste the list. No cookies, nothing.

I hope i have been thorough in my offerings, if not, just ask, or you can visit this thread in Irons site for explanations and more details. Fanboy himself posts there... Fanboy Posts in SRWare Forum

Here is a link to Fanboys lists for different browsers and language... Fanboy Browsers Listing. Thanks again so much Marco. I am liking this very much. And your english is fine.

I hope I'm not confusing people with all this. I'm just trying to share what i have with you, in hopes you can modify it to work with winpenpack.

What the...i just tested all my links and they all bring me to a (Error 404 - Document Not Found) page??
I don't know if it's just my browser that is n't working or if they work for anyone else here. In any case, thanks big time also to Danix for help! i guess I'll find out if/when somebody responds to the mess i just made....so sorry if i messed up!

No problem! You miss the right sintax for links!
I already corrected your post. Have a look to your post in EDITING mode to understand modifications made.
Now your links are working properly.

I was aware about this use of Fanboy adblock.ini, anyway all Your suggestions are always welcome and can be useful for English users!. Many Thanks again
the quickest way to have Your own adblock.ini into your X-Iron is:
right click on this adblock.ini link and select "save link as".
So You can directly save it in BIN/IRON folder as "adblock.ini" (overwriting previous version, if present)

And, last, but not less important....
If You want to spend part of your time helping me/our staff in future site translations, this will be very appreciated by the whole wPP team!
Maybe We can send You our translations and You can adapt them wit your "fluent American English". Let Us know...

Thanks very much for fixing my links Taf! I did look at the post in editing mode and i used the link syntax, the icon farthest to the left of the message box, right? I hover my mouse above it and it confirms it's the right one. Huh. About your adblock.ini link, do you mean "save as"? or "save link as"?

I'm pretty sure the name has to be the same as the destination folder, which would be adblock.ini, no "link" included. Though i don't know enough about X-Iron yet. I will probably do the whole switch-over today. As far as helping you by translating, i would be happy to help, though i see no problem with your English or Danix's. I understand you guys perfectly, but make whatever requests you like to me, and i will be glad to help.

Oh, i forgot to respond to this...

Ok, here's the thing, Iron has a default adblock.ini folder that comes with installation, but seeing as how Iron is not connected to a server, it can't be updated. So that leaves us users 2 choices. We either use chromes adblocker, (which gives you the warning...
----------
install adblock?

This extension can access:
Your data on all websites
Your browsing history
-----------
Or we can use fanboys adblocker, which has no tracking software at all, and even the auto-updater has to manually be clicked on, but the only thing that happens is you download an updated list. It maintains no connections to any servers, therefore, cannot access data on all websites, or my browsing history.

Iron has been asked this question before, and they don't want to rewrite the code to include an updater list. That would make much more work for them to have to maintain an updated adblocker. They want to keep Iron as simple and maintain-ance free as they can. I'm still petitioning them for the cookie prompt. I kinda doubt they will though, because I think it's "hard coded' into the chromium code they use for iron, and they are too lazy to rewrite it. Too bad. I think it makes Iron the best browser on the web by far with the cookie prompt.

I have the link you gave me to fanboys adblocker list on my toolbar in case the auto-updater stops working for some reason, only it's to a secure server connection to download the list, here..https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/iron/complete/adblock.ini

Haha...i figured it out..=hyperlink url]..i have to delete "hyperlink url" for it to form a working link...lol.
